How Often Should a Local Business Post on Social Media?
The real answer to posting frequency for small businesses. Not what the gurus say — what actually works when you're running a business full-time.
The Answer Nobody Wants to Hear
3–5 times per week is ideal. But 2 times per week consistently is better than 7 times per week for one month and then nothing.
The biggest killer of business social media isn't posting too little — it's the burnout cycle. You go hard for a few weeks, run out of content and energy, disappear for a month, then feel guilty and try again. The algorithm notices. Your followers notice. And you're basically starting from scratch each time.
Platform-Specific Recommendations
Instagram - Minimum: 3 Reels per week - Ideal: 4–5 Reels + 2–3 Stories per week - Maximum useful: 7 Reels per week (after this, quality usually drops)
Instagram rewards consistency more than volume. Posting 3 strong Reels every week for 6 months will outperform posting daily for 6 weeks.
TikTok - Minimum: 3 per week - Ideal: 5–7 per week (TikTok rewards higher volume more than Instagram) - Maximum useful: 1–2 per day
TikTok is more forgiving of "rougher" content, so higher volume is more achievable. Quantity matters more here than on Instagram.
Facebook - Minimum: 1–2 per week (just to stay active) - Ideal: 3–4 per week - Don't bother posting more than once per day — Facebook throttles pages that post too frequently
The Realistic Schedule for a Busy Business Owner
If you're running a business and handling social media yourself:
Week 1 setup: Batch-film 8–10 short clips in one session (takes 1–2 hours)
Daily (5 min): Post one pre-filmed clip with a caption. Reply to comments.
Weekly (30 min): Check which posts performed best. Plan next week's content angles.
That's roughly 3 hours per month of actual work for consistent posting.
Quality vs Quantity
One Reel that gets 10,000 views is worth more than ten Reels that get 200 views each. But you won't know which one will be the hit until you post all of them.
The real answer is you need enough volume to find what works, then you double down on that format. Most businesses need to post at least 20–30 Reels before they find their winning format.
When to Post More vs When to Post Less
- You're just starting out (need data on what works)
- You have a seasonal push (holiday, event, new launch)
- A specific format is working — ride the wave
- Quality is suffering — blurry, rushed, or repetitive content hurts more than skipping a day
- You're burning out — take a planned break, don't just disappear
- You're posting just to post with nothing to say
The Actual Minimum
If everything above sounds like too much, here's the absolute floor: post 2 Reels per week, every week, without fail. That's 8 per month. The algorithm will recognize you as an active account, your followers will see you regularly, and you'll have enough data to improve.
Two per week is sustainable for almost anyone. Start there.
