Instagram Reels vs Stories vs Feed Posts: When to Use Each
Each Instagram format serves a different purpose. Here's when to use Reels, Stories, and feed posts for your business.
The Simple Framework
- Reels = reach new people (discovery)
- Stories = talk to existing followers (connection)
- Feed Posts = build your visual brand (first impression)
Each format does something different. Using them wrong is like using a billboard to have a private conversation.
Reels: Your Growth Engine
Reels are how new people find you. Instagram actively pushes Reels to non-followers through the Explore page and Reels tab. This is the only format that consistently reaches people who don't already follow you.
- Content you want to go wide — showcasing your product, space, or vibe
- Hook-driven content that's designed to stop scrolling
- Trending audio or formats that tap into existing momentum
- Educational tips or "did you know" content
- Before/after transformations
Specs: Vertical (9:16), 15–90 seconds. The sweet spot is 15–30 seconds for local businesses.
Posting frequency: 3–5 per week minimum
Stories: Your Relationship Builder
Stories only reach your existing followers (and not all of them — usually 10-30%). They disappear in 24 hours. This makes them perfect for casual, in-the-moment content.
- Daily updates ("packed house tonight," "new special today")
- Behind-the-scenes that's too casual for a Reel
- Polls and questions (drives engagement and gives you market research)
- Reposting customer tags and mentions
- Quick announcements (hours change, sold-out items, events)
- Linking to external content (your website, booking page, menu)
Specs: Vertical (9:16), up to 60 seconds per story. Multiple slides are fine — 3–7 per day is normal.
Posting frequency: Daily when possible. Stories keep you top-of-mind.
Feed Posts (Carousels + Photos): Your Storefront
When someone visits your profile for the first time, they see your feed grid. Feed posts shape that first impression. A cohesive, clean feed signals professionalism.
- Carousel posts (swipeable image sets) — great for educational content, menu highlights, or "top 5" lists
- High-quality photos of your space, products, or team
- Announcements you want to live permanently on your profile
- Testimonials or press mentions
Specs: Square (1:1) or vertical (4:5) for photos. Carousels can be up to 20 slides.
Posting frequency: 1–2 per week is plenty. Quality over quantity.
The Weekly Template
Here's a realistic content mix for a local business:
- Monday: Story — "Back at it, here's what's happening this week"
- Tuesday: Reel — behind-the-scenes or product content
- Wednesday: Story — poll or question to drive engagement
- Thursday: Reel — your best content of the week
- Friday: Reel — weekend energy content + Stories throughout the night
- Saturday: Stories — real-time content from your busiest day
- Sunday: Feed post — carousel or high-quality photo
Reels grow your audience. Stories keep them engaged. Feed posts make a strong first impression. All three matter, but if you can only do one — do Reels.
