Instagram Upload Settings for Best Video Quality
Stop posting blurry Reels. The exact Instagram settings and export specs that keep your videos sharp in 2026.
Why Your Reels Look Blurry
Instagram compresses every video you upload. If you upload a file that's already low quality, Instagram compresses it again and it looks terrible. The fix is uploading at the highest quality possible so the compression has more to work with.
Phone Settings (Before You Film)
iPhone 1. Go to Settings → Camera → Record Video 2. Select 4K at 30fps (not 60fps — Instagram doesn't support it and will compress harder) 3. Turn on HDR Video (Settings → Camera → toggle on) 4. Go to Settings → Camera → Formats → select High Efficiency
Android (Samsung/Pixel) 1. Open Camera → tap Settings gear 2. Set Video resolution to UHD 4K or 3840x2160 3. Set FPS to 30 4. Turn on HDR10+ if available
Instagram App Settings
These are the settings most people miss:
- Open Instagram → tap your profile → tap the three lines (menu)
- Go to Settings and privacy → Data usage and media quality
- Turn on Upload at highest quality
That single toggle makes a massive difference. Instagram defaults to compressing your uploads to save bandwidth. Turning this on tells it to keep the quality.
Export Settings (If You Edit First)
If you're editing in CapCut, InShot, or any editor before posting:
- Resolution: 1080 x 1920 (9:16 vertical)
- Frame rate: 30fps
- Bitrate: At least 10 Mbps (higher is better — 20 Mbps ideal)
- Codec: H.264
- Format: MP4
Don't export at 4K for Instagram. It'll just get crushed down to 1080p anyway. Export at 1080x1920 with a high bitrate — that's the sweet spot.
Things That Kill Quality
- Uploading via desktop browser — use the phone app, always
- Sharing from other apps (like saving from TikTok and re-uploading) — each re-save degrades quality
- Low light footage — dark footage compresses poorly and gets grainy. If your space is dark, add lighting
- Too much fast motion — panning quickly creates compression artifacts. Move the camera slowly
- Text-heavy videos — small text gets blurry after compression. Use larger, bold fonts
Quick Checklist
- Film at 4K 30fps
- Turn on "Upload at highest quality" in Instagram settings
- Export at 1080x1920, 30fps, 10+ Mbps bitrate
- Upload directly from your phone, not desktop
- Avoid uploading files that have been saved/re-exported multiple times
